Where to live in Perth as a FIFO worker: suburbs near the airport

The best suburb in Perth for a FIFO worker depends on one thing first, the terminal you fly from. Terminals 1 and 2 have a train station. Terminals 3 and 4 do not. Here is how the suburbs around the airport and along the Airport Line line up, with nothing invented.

The best suburb in Perth for a FIFO worker depends on one thing before anything else: the terminal you fly from. Terminals 1 and 2 have a train station at the door. Terminals 3 and 4 do not, and are reached by road or by a free bus from Redcliffe Station. Once you know your terminal, the choice is between the suburbs around the airport, for the shortest run on fly-out day, and the suburbs along the Airport Line, for a train to the terminal.

This guide sets out what can be checked: the stations, the bus, the parking rules and where each suburb sits. It does not give drive times, median rents or a ranking, because nobody publishes figures that would hold for your flight, your budget and your roster. Sources were checked in October 2026.

Which terminal do you fly from?

Ask your employer before you look at a single room. Perth Airport has two terminal precincts on opposite sides of the airfield: T1 and T2 on one side, T3 and T4 on the other. They are not next door to each other, and public transport treats them differently.

  • T1 and T2. Airport Central Station is here. The WA Government's project page says travellers use the Skybridge to connect between the station and Terminals 1 and 2.
  • T3 and T4. The Public Transport Authority says there is no direct connection from T3 and T4 to a train station. The free Route 292 bus links these terminals to Redcliffe Station.

Charter flights to site do not all leave from the same place, and it can change with your contract. If your employer can't tell you yet, choose a suburb that works for both.

What does the Airport Line actually connect?

The Airport Line opened on 9 October 2022 with three new stations: Redcliffe, Airport Central and High Wycombe. Transperth's timetable (effective 13 October 2025) shows the trains running in this order:

  • High Wycombe, the end of the line, on the far side of the airport from the city
  • Airport Central, at T1 and T2
  • Redcliffe, where the Route 292 bus leaves for T3 and T4
  • Bayswater, the first station shared with other lines
  • Meltham, Maylands, Mt Lawley, East Perth, Claisebrook and McIver
  • Perth, then on to Claremont

From Redcliffe Station, the Public Transport Authority says the trip to the Perth CBD takes about 15 minutes.

Two things follow. First, every suburb with a station on that list has a train to T1 and T2 without a change. Second, the train only helps if it runs before your flight. Check-in for a site flight is often very early, so open the timetable, find the first train from your station on the day you fly, and compare it with the time you have to be at the terminal. Do this before you sign anything.

Which suburbs are near Perth Airport?

Three groups are worth comparing. The middle column is fact. The right-hand column is what you still have to check for yourself.

Should you live next to the airport or further out?

It is a trade between fly-out day and every other day.

Next to the airport makes sense when you are home one week in three and mostly want an easy trip, a quiet house and sleep. A group of FIFO workers looking for a house in Perth put it simply: they wanted airport access "as we are all flying in and out regularly", and "a comfortable place to call home between our FIFO swings".

Along the train line or further out makes sense on an even-time roster, when half your nights are at home and the suburb itself matters more: friends, the river, the beach, a gym you like. You pay for that with a longer trip on fly-out day. For the inner suburbs and the coast, see finding flatmates in Perth.

Your roster tells you which side of the trade you are on. The arithmetic for 2:1, 8:6 and 2:2 is in FIFO rosters explained.

Where does your car go while you are on site?

Do not plan on leaving it at a train station. Transperth's parking rules, checked in October 2026:

  • Parking at a Transperth station costs $2 on weekdays and is free on weekends and public holidays.
  • A ticket is valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase.
  • Station parking is for Transperth customers only.
  • Redcliffe Station has 476 parking bays. Airport Central Station has none.

A 24-hour ticket does not cover a two-week swing. That leaves the room you rent. Parking is one of the first things FIFO seekers ask hosts about in Perth, so ask it in your first message: is there a space, is it off the street, and who can move the car if it is in the way while you are gone? Put the answer in writing with the rest of the share house rules.

What does FIFO accommodation in Perth cost?

We are not going to quote a median. Weekly rent for a room changes with the suburb, the house, what is included and the month you look, and a number printed here would be wrong by the time you read it.

What can be said is what people looking in Perth say themselves: "The rental market is very competitive at the moment (more demand than properties so prices are high & it can take quite a while to find a room)". So compare real, current rooms in two or three suburbs from the table above, and compare like with like:

  • Bills included or split
  • Parking included or not
  • Furnished or unfurnished
  • Minimum stay, and the bond
  • Whether the host prices in the weeks you are away

On that last point, some Perth hosts do lower the rent for a FIFO housemate, and say so in their ads with lines like "because you're barely home". Many do not. It is a fair question, and a fair answer either way. What rent does to your take-home pay is worked through in FIFO salary: what workers really take home.

You can browse rooms to see current weekly rents by suburb.

What should a FIFO worker ask before choosing a room?

  • How do people in this house get to the airport for an early flight?
  • Is there a parking space I can leave a car in for my whole swing?
  • Is the house quiet during the day? The first day back, especially off night shift, is mostly sleep.
  • Is my room mine for the whole cycle, including the weeks I am away?
  • Are bills included, and does being away change my share?
  • What kind of agreement is it, and what bond do you ask for?

The agreement question matters more than it looks. A tenant and a boarder do not have the same protections in WA. See rooming house, boarder or housemate: what's the difference in WA?. And for the whole move, in order, see moving to Perth for FIFO work: the complete checklist.

Whatever the suburb, inspect the room in person before you pay anything. The warning signs are in rental scams in Perth.

How Kipmates helps with the suburb question

Kipmates is a room-share marketplace launching in Perth. Rooms are listed by suburb with the weekly rent and the move-in date, hosts can mark a household as FIFO-friendly, and your roster sits on your profile so a host knows your pattern before the first message. Listings show an approximate area, never the exact address, so check the trip to your terminal with the host before you inspect.

FAQ

What is the best suburb in Perth for FIFO workers?

There is no single best suburb. If you fly from T1 or T2, any suburb with an Airport Line station gives you a train to Airport Central. If you fly from T3 or T4, Redcliffe has the free Route 292 bus to the terminals, and Belmont, Cloverdale, Ascot and Kewdale are next to the airport by road.

Which Perth suburbs are on the Airport Line?

Transperth's timetable lists High Wycombe, Airport Central, Redcliffe and Bayswater, then Meltham, Maylands, Mt Lawley, East Perth, Claisebrook, McIver and Perth, with trains continuing to Claremont.

Is there a train to Perth Airport Terminals 3 and 4?

No. The Public Transport Authority says there is no direct connection from T3 and T4 to a train station. The free Route 292 bus runs between those terminals and Redcliffe Station on the Airport Line.

Can I leave my car at a train station while I am on site?

Not for a whole swing. Transperth says a station parking ticket is valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase, and that station parking is for Transperth customers only. Airport Central Station has no parking bays at all.

How much is a room near Perth Airport?

It depends on the house, what the rent includes and when you look, and we do not publish a median. Compare current listings in two or three suburbs, and check whether bills and parking are included before you compare prices.

Do FIFO workers need to live close to the airport?

No, but you make the trip twice every cycle, often very early. The fewer nights you spend at home, the more that trip weighs against everything else a suburb offers.
